Leptopoda

Location

The village of Leptopoda was founded in the northern district of today's village, near Emvolos. The houses are connected and served as a wall, protecting the residents in times of war, while the side-by-side rooftops gave the residents a chance to escape to the forest.

One of the best aspects of Leptopoda is traveling there, down from Kambi over a small path. The trip touches almost all the senses, and nature-lovers will enjoy the enticing beauty, the sensuous fragrance and the melody in the air. Once there, a breathtaking view of the rich, deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea from the "Balcony of the Aegean" will reward any effort.

The villages entrance today consists of an abandoned elementary school and a church dedicated to the "Genisis tis Theotokou" (Birth of the Virgin Mary). On September 8th, there is also a festival taking place in honor of the birth of the Theotokos. Although the exact date of construction is unknown, it is said that the church was erected before the 17th century.

Today only around 30 people inhabit the village, and only in the winter times. In the summer, the population drops even more, since the villagers go to their summer homes in Aghiasmata. Nevertheless, this village is worth spending a visit, regardless of remoteness.
